Born in Maryland, Benjamin F. Mackall came to Moorhead in 1873, just a year after the town was founded. Mackall was the town's first druggist, and subsequently served as Moorhead's postmaster, clerk, and member of the city council. He also helped establish St. John's Episcopal Church in Moorhead.
